At the beginning of the decent weather this year the ground was rock hard like concrete now at end of the year its deep mud and very boggy we have had a few times when it was a pleasure to dig in nice warm soil with the sun out but us yorkshire lads are tough and resilient and always look forward to a pint after a long day out in the fields mulling over our dig .. Lets hope 2020 will be perfect

Yeah it's been too hard or too wet really, with a short period in the middle where it was lovely. I have a small grass meadow to do at the weekend, it's been walked a fair few times but with the persistent rain I'm hoping all the moisture will lift a few deep targets we haven't heard before.

One of my permissions I've had for 3 years now has been fairly easy to dig, until this year, after harvesting the first couple of weeks the earth was like concrete, in places it was impossible to dig, even after the plough had been through it the lumps were rock solid, but now after weeks of rain and settling it's like a swamp ! The first inch or so is crumbly but underneath it's like soup in the low spots, had to abandon the dig yesterday, every time I took a step I would sink to my ankles and struggle to get my feet out, the ground must be compacted that much that water can not drain away, it's just sitting there, not sure what Mr. Farmer is going to do, he can't plant anything as it will just be sat in waterlogged ground, I checked my weather app today and it says snow for Sunday, snow, it's not looking good at all, well at least I know what's in the ground will not be going anywhere soon, so I may get an extended digging season this year !

Interesting Flatlander, it's been mild in early November for years where I am, but last night the car was frosted and as you say, snow in places. Could be an early winter this year, or a long one ??

The forecast snow was a no show, the sun is out but it's a bit chilly here to say the least, temperature is reading 3 degrees, a great day for being out in the fields, unfortunately all my permissions are far too wet to walk on let alone try and dig a hole without making a bloody great big mess, fingers crossed I get a day out in the week, luckily I am retired now so I can get out as often as the weather and my good lady wife allow lol.

Went on pasture today, super soft digging. Me and my buddy found a tiny buckle, battered hammy and a broken Roman. But it was fun and great to be on the fields. Hope you get out in the week mate.
